Auction Highlights

D-Day Operation Overlord Interest North Staffs Officer Helmet - Attached G-3 Division Supreme Headquarters (SHAEF) Involved In Operation Overlord Planning. A MkII steel helmet with decal of the North Staffordshire Regiment & name scratched into underside of rim 'MOLLOY' with service number. . Maurice Dermot Molloy was a Lieutenant Colonel in the North Staffs regiment appointed to G-3 Division of Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force ( SHAEF) who were the central operational hub for the invasion of Normandy , Operation Overlord & subsequent campaigns. The name of the officer is very faintly visible to the underside of the rim along with his service number. Helmet has Maker mark & date 'JSS 1940' ( Joseph Sankey ) . 1938 dated liner cradle with a thick textured khaki paint finish applied over its smooth factory finish. Minimal wear due to this officer being in a planning role albeit vital to the Invasion Of NW Europe. Included is the copy of a printed memo from the Public Record Office issued by Lieutenant-General HM Gale Chief Administrative officer at SHAEF headquarters in relation to S/Lieut Col 16360 MOLLOY, Maurice Dermot N.Staffs which reads ' Lieut.Col MOLLOY has performed outstanding service in the execution of his duties with the Operatiosn Section , G-s Division of Supreme Headquarters during the period of seven months in which he has held this appointment. He has distinguished himself by the unflagging energy , devotion to duty , great enthusiasm & efficiency which he has displayed during this arduous period. he has made a very positive contribution to the succesful execution of the Operations in North-West EUROPE.

Trunk contains the following predominantly named items from 1st Lt Schnell..1.Mud covered US M17 helmet with red engineers insignia 2.Officer model Montana campaign hat with standard black & gold cords inc. spare cord 3.Garrison/Visor cap maker marked Lavenstein Bros Co ,Peterburg VA with minor moth around top comes with scarce rain cover dated 14 March 18 minor damage to leather.Two caps, Both piped with engineers scarlet & white . One cap is private purchase with rank bar & has some moth damage .Second cap is enlisted mans overseas cap 5.Sweater 6.Gas mask in excellent still supple undamaged condition with yellow filter , instruction card dated 6.8.18. 7.Ankle boots with toecaps. 8. Pair puttees. 9.Canteen M1910 with '18 drinking cup & cover marked US & 1917 dated. 10.Messtin set 11.Haversack M1910 with three labels of where posted one reads 'F.Co 37th Engrs 1st Lt CC Schnell Pack,Camp Sherman ,Ohio 12. Trousers & Tunic with original rank & engineers insig. & shoulder patch of Third Army . Right breast pocket contains telegram from 1st Lt Schnells wife arranging to meet him at the station with her train ticket dated 1919. Both jacket & trousers good match. 13 Trousers 14. Broad arrow marked clothing label intact to interior with date April 1940 . Printed 'Hampshire' shoulder titles . Brass buttons to front fly complete. Overall a worn BD with minor moth nips in places.

This helmet has had a blue & red diamond flash of the Artillery placed over a three colour flash of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry . The 8th Battn KOYLI transferred to the Royal Artillery early in the war & fought in a Light Anti Aircraft role as the 94th Light AA regiment . Transferring to the Guards Armoured Division in 1942 & fought with them in North West Europe from June 1944 until May 1945. Marked 'RoCo1939' to underside of rim ( Rubery owen) & dated 1939 the liner is marked VERO & dated 1940.

This helmet has had a blue & red diamond flash of the Artillery placed over a three colour flash of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry . The 8th Battn KOYLI transferred to the Royal Artillery early in the war & fought in a Light Anti Aircraft role as the 94th Light AA regiment . Transferring to the Guards Armoured Division in 1942 & fought with them in North West Europe from June 1944 until May 1945. $WW2 British First Pattern Paratrooper Denison Smock 1943. A large sized 7 Denison smock with intact clothing label giving maker as Hoffman & date of 1943. A broad arrowed W/I\D inspectors 'N' code also gives date of 1943. Complete with working half zip made by Lightning with intact & original tail to reverse. All brass Newey snap fasteners are fully functional. Good camouflage colours with service wear there being fraying to bottom edge in places. To rear of smock there are two stab sized lacerations which have been later patched to reverse as well a few small holes from heavy wear.$
